BlogCatolog Update - New Owner Improving The Site
After posting my criticisms of BlogCatalog I received very nice emails from Tony Berkman, the brand new owner of the site. After finding out that he is BlogCatalog's new owner and is working hard with a limited staff to make improvements I felt quite bad for being so critical. I usually don't complain a lot on my blog, and for the most part I try to stick to the facts, and this is exactly why. When I made the criticisms of BlogCatalog I didn't have all of the facts. Tony Berkman is not only trying to improve BlogCatalog but he is also a really nice guy. Here is the message he sent me, explaining his situation.
Hi Christy,
This is Tony Berkman from BlogCatalog. Your comments and feedback are valuable.
I purhcased BlogCatalog 2 months ago. Since that time we have spent countless hours removing all the trash and sex sites from BlogCatalog. We only have a couple of people on staff.
This is my highest priority. I detest those sites. When I purhcase the site it was inundated with disgusting things. Since that date we have deleted over 3,000 sites from BlogCatalog. Our standards for new blogs accepted are very high. We continue to go through the site and remove any site that has nudity in it (aside from where there is some high artistic value..which is a rare combination).
The search page we put up there displaying terms people are searching for was something we though would be interesting to see.
I did not realize (I guess I'm naive) that so many people would search the site for sex related things. The good thing is people searching for those terms are not finding much content. However your point is excellent and I'm getting my programmer to remove to remove all sex related terms and implement a system where we approve search terms before they show up.
The issue of disgusting avatars is something that we also need to address. It has been on my mind lately how we can prevent people for putting up smut. Perhaps we need to screen each avatar before it goes live.
Regarding our email not working. It does work. We also include a phone number on that page. Please call me if you want to discuss this more.
The community widget is similar to MyBlogLog. This was our first one and we will be upgrading it. My goal is to make this a highly useful site to the blogging community.
Your insights and honesty are valuable to me and BlogCatalog.
I would love the opportunity to talk to you more about how we can better server the blogging community.
Thanks for taking the time to critique what we are doing.
Tony Berkman
Thank You Tony for responding to my concerns so quickly, I really appreciate it. I was at the site today and the improvements are evident. I will definitely be sticking around the BlogCatalog Community. Good luck with the site!
